Agriculture leaders who put our smart farm capabilities to work can make more date-driven, informed decisions that drive results.
Our facility is home to the Ottawa Smart Farm – an agritech innovation playground. Whether you’re looking to develop, test, validate, demonstrate or commercialize smart agriculture solutions or Best Management Practices, this is the place to do it. Established by Invest Ottawa and the City of Ottawa, the Smart Farm:
- Brings together autonomous systems, sensors, IoT technologies, telecommunications, big data, analytics, robotics, drones and CAVs on 100 acres of farmland
- Is the largest secure test facility in Canada located at a former federal agriculture research facility in a completely fenced and gated 1,866-acre site
- Is equipped with GPS (RTK), dedicated short-range communications (DSRC), WiFi, 4G/LTE, private LTE, LoRa, whitespace and 5G (including mmWave) telecommunications and networking infrastructure
Put technology to work
Leveraging top tech talent and agricultural expertise, we put technology to work to help you make more data-driven, informed decisions that drive:
- Cost and production efficiency
- Crop yield and quality
- Waste management and environmental sustainability
Smart farming is a practice involving a system of sensors interconnected. These sensors are in the form of ground sampling sensors, optical cameras, and more. The remote sensing, interconnectivity, as well as data transmission rates of these systems can be simulated using Ansys STK and HFSS. Aerial or satellite scans can be used to simulate coverage of multispectral and hyperspectral cameras that can assess soil properties and crop health. This reduces time spent flight planning for drone-based operations and ensures mission success.

“In 2019, the City of Ottawa, Invest Ottawa and the National Capital Commission hosted a precision agriculture demonstration event with our Association of Agriculture Equipment Manufacturers (AEM). Hosted at Area X.O, this event enabled companies, leaders and policy makers from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and other federal departments to experience leading smart farm technologies and equipment. It allowed these leaders to explore how innovations from John Deere, Trimble, CaseIH and New Holland are being applied in the field to help farmers achieve environmental and production benefits.”
Nick Tindall, Senior Director of Regulatory Affairs and Ag Policy, AEM
“GPS Ontario has served as a pioneer in the precision agriculture industry for the last two decades. We promote complete farm solutions from hardware to data management, providing a completely tailored solution for farmers. The Smart Farm at Area X.O provides our firm with critical validation and demonstration space that outfitted with the advanced technology, expertise and industry Best Management Practices (BMPs). We aim to demonstrate and educate growers about how to make agriculture more sustainable and profitable, and leverage technology to grow more with less”.
Jordan Wallace, Producer; GPS Ontario; Trimble
“Ottawa is uniquely positioned to help local and global innovators address key challenges facing the agriculture sector. In addition to decades of deep technology expertise, Ottawa is the only large city in Canada with a substantial agriculture sector with more than 1,000 working farms. Internationally known for our research capacity, our region is also home to many regulatory agencies, research centres and the Greenbelt, including 4,000 hectares of high-quality agriculture land leased to producers. Area X.O brings these capabilities together at the Smart Farm. We are proud to serve as an investor and partner in this critical facility, and the value it is delivering to farmers, producers and agritech firms.”
Geraldine Wildman, Program Manager, Natural Systems and Rural Affairs, City of Ottawa
