Communication Towers and Infrastructure
Area X.O is the only integrated smart city/V2X living lab and test facilities of its kind in North America and operates one of the most advanced communication test infrastructures in the world including multiple GPS systems, 4G/LTE, Wi-Fi, LoRa, TV Whitespace, 5G including mmWave, and satellite backhaul.
Smart and connected technology, rely on these communication systems and a multitude of sensors to navigate safely.
Area X.O also runs Band 14, the Public Safety band, enabling a host of public safety, emergency preparedness, smart mobility and related tests and projects. Access to these communications systems to test and validate technology is a real game changer for testing partners and clients.

Smart Intersection
In partnership with the City of Ottawa, Area X.O manages a smart intersection as part of the Area X.O public test track in the Kanata North Tech Park.
The smart intersection provides a real-world environment for qualified companies to validate their products. Technology features DSRC in the traffic intersections, that provide vehicles with the light data and additional SPAT data.
The smart intersection features technologies and sensors that monitor:
- Road surface and subsurface temperatures
- Traffic signal status
- Vehicle detection sensors using RF signatures – Bluetooth, WiFi, LTE
- Enhanced camera detection tools using AI technologies
- Wind and other atmospheric sensors;
- 4G and 5G communications technologies; and
- More
Railway Crossing
The Area X.O site features a smart railway crossing. The smart railway crossing aims to help improve the safety of railroad systems and enables the quick onboarding and testing of new technology, sensors and devices that interact and communicate with road users and smart mobility.
Command Center
The Area X.O Command Centre is the heart of the Area X.O private facility with a broad array of sensors and IoT devices, authentic city infrastructure, and leading-edge networks, data analytics and cloud storage.
The command centre enables the testing of different devices and sensors with numerous control endpoints that generate real-time data and facilitate real-time automated actions and operations. Users can orchestrate and manage actions with a unified real-time view into all smart city assets, infrastructure and services.
CPU: Intel Xenon Gold 6230R CPU @ 2.10 GHz
RAM: 64.0 GB
GPU: NVIDIA RTX A6000
Dedicated workstations within the command centre support remote operations to simulate custom scenarios using Ansys software. The Area X.O team includes specialized technical staff available to assist clients
